FAQ:
Q: What denomination of Judaism is this program affiliated with?
A: Backyard Bar Mitzvah is a non-denominational “Torah” program (not “religious”);
we tailor the study and ceremony to the needs and expectations of Jewish families of all flavors.
Q: Who’s actually running this program?
A: BYB is a project of JSLI – click on the link at the bottom of this page to learn about our organization.
Q: How much guidance will you give my child in writing the speech (Dvar Torah)?
A: As much as your child needs. Bar or bat mitzvah prep is a blend of teaching, coaching and mentoring.
Q: How much guidance will you give the parents and family in preparing for the big day?
A: As much as you need. We’re here for you every step of the way.
Q: In what geographic locations do you offer the program?
A: Thanks to Zoom, it doesn’t matter where you’re located.
The celebration can be anywhere on earth safe to travel to.
Q: What kind of feedback have you received from participants?
A: “Just what our child/family needed!” is typical. Even 10 years later, the now-adult children tell us that the backyard bar mitzvah was a significant milestone on their Jewish journey, giving them a meaningful introduction to the Torah, a lifetime connection to the Jewish People, and a great sense of achievement.
Q: Can you provide references?
A: Certainly; please ask.
Q: Can you convince my reluctant child to do this program?
A: Usually!
Q: Do you offer a program for adults who never had a bar or bat mitzvah?
A: Yes! You’re never too old to claim your Jewish heritage!
Q: What are the details?
A: We will have a 30-minute Zoom meeting to discuss the range of possibilities.
